Beryl makes landfall as Category 2 hurricane

05 Jul 2024 / Yucatan Pensinsula & Gulf of Mexico

Hurricane Beryl made landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula as a Category 2 storm early this morning (5 July) after leaving a path of destruction along the Caribbean while not directly hitting any area.

It is expected to cross the peninsula and restrengthen into a hurricane before making a projected landfall south of Corpus Christi Monday morning (8 July).

As Beryl remerges in the Bay of Campeche overnight, the high pressure ridge in the southeastern U.S. will shift east slightly and weaken, supporting a more north-northwestward movement through this weekend. In addition, a large-scale trough over the central U.S. will lead to more northerly flow. The secondary and final landfall is expected near or just north of the U.S.-Mexico border/Rio Grande Valley sometime into early Monday morning. The main factors that will determine the northward extent of the track will depend on how much strengthening occurs. A stronger system would be able to tap into the northerly flow from the trough more, leading to a more northern landfall, but at this point landfall further north than Corpus Cristi is not expected, even with a stronger system.

The US Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi is starting to upgrade the port readiness status.
